Antonio Gwynn Jr., an 18-year-old high school student, has been offered a full scholarship to Medaille College and can zip to class in a red, 2004 Ford Mustang convertible, a gift from a grateful local who was moved by the teen’s initiative, according to reports.
He’s even getting a year of free auto insurance, courtesy of a local businessman.
“I just felt compelled to help him out,” Bob Briceland of Briceland Insurance told Buffalo’s WKBW-TV. “We just need to get together our whole city and show people how there’s so many good people here.”
Like other cities throughout the country, Buffalo has been hit with demonstrations in the wake of the May 25 police custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
After seeing the damage to his hometown, Gwynn picked up a broom Monday and began sweeping up the debris at 2 a.m. Monday — and continued for 10 hours straight.
When volunteers showed up later in the day, they found the teen already hard at work, according to CNN.
Matt Block saw the story on local news and was moved enough to hand the teen the keys to his dream car — the mustang.
“I couldn’t come to grips with selling it and this was a good way for me to get rid of it and know someone that gets it is going to appreciate it,” he told WKBW.
Unbeknownst to Block, the car has special significance to Gwynn — it was
“The car he sent me a picture of was the same exact car that my mom first got me,” Gwynn said, adding that his mother died in 2018. “It’s the same color, same everything.”
