#Toei Unveils New Dragon Ball Super Film Title, Teaser Video, New Character

Toei Animation announced the title of the new Dragon Ball Super anime film at the San Diego Comic-Con virtual event’s Special Dragon Ball panel. Titled Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, the film is scheduled to premiere in 2022, with a film teaser video and a new character being revealed at the panel as well. The film has a goal of telling “a large-scale story,” and plans to focus on the “superhero” aspect.

Aside from teasing the usage of different technology for visual expressions, the panel also revealed designs for returning characters. Piccolo, for example, has yellow upper arms and a red obi (sash), Pan wears her kindergarten uniform, and Krillin now has white eyes. Hironobu Kageyama also performed the song “Cha-la Head Cha-la.”

Original creator Akira Toriyama is the story composer and character designer, and he will also write lines of dialogue for the film. Toriyama shared a message to fans:

An all new movie since “Dragon Ball Super: Broly” is currently in the making!

Just like the previous movie, I’m heavily leading the story and dialogue production for another amazing film.

I really shouldn’t talk too much about the plot yet, but be prepared for some extreme and entertaining bouts, which may feature an unexpected character.

We’ll be charting through some unexplored territory in terms of the visual aesthetics to give the audience an amazing ride, so I hope everybody will look forward to the new movie!

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is the second film in the Dragon Ball Super franchise and the 21st anime film in the overall Dragon Ball franchise upon its release.

The Dragon Ball Super: Broly film opened in Japan in December 2018, grossing more than US$120 million worldwide. Tatsuya Nagamine (One Piece Film Z) served as director with original creator Akira Toriyama as scriptwriter and character designer, Naohiro Shintani (One Piece Film Z) as animation director, Kazuo Ogura (One Piece Film Gold) as art director, and Norihito Sumitomo (Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’) as music composer.

The Dragon Ball Super TV anime series premiered in July 2015 and ran for 131 episodes until March 2018. 

Toyotarō launched the Dragon Ball Super manga in V Jump magazine in June 2015 as an adaptation of the anime, with Akira Toriyama credited as the creator of the manga’s original story. However, the manga diverges from the anime in many ways. Viz Media publishes the manga in print and is also uploading the manga online as it releases in Japan.
