#Bridge snaps plunging Miss Thailand contestants into pond

These posing pageant queens are all wet after getting dunked into a dirty pond.

New viral video footage captures the dramatic — or hilarious, depending on your perspective — moment a bridge snaps, plunging 30 smiling Miss Thailand contestants into a dirty lagoon.

The glammed-up crown chasers were mugging for the cameras Monday morning as part of the second day of the competition in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

As part of their promotional duties, the contestants visited a cafe and posed for pictures on a suspension bridge constructed from ropes connected to a steel walkway.

However, the structure collapsed under their combined weight — sending them crashing into the filthy water below.

Organizers said the bridge was strong, but not strong enough when all the contestants were on it at the same time.

Three of the girls were injured, with one suffering cuts and bruises on her forehead, while two others had minor scrapes, Newsflare reported. The unintentionally bathed beauties were rushed to the hospital for a checkup but have already been discharged.

Worapot Chatkanjana, 43, the admittedly embarrassed owner of the restaurant where the event was being held, promised to cover treatment costs for the injured women. He donated 500,000 baht (about $16,500 USD) to cover their medical bills.

”I’ll also pay for the other contestants to have their dresses cleaned professionally,” Chatkanjana said. ”I don’t know why the bridge broke. It is strong, but it just could not handle the weight of the women. In the future, we will make improvements to the bridge to be even stronger.”

For now, the remaining 27 hopefuls will continue campaigning for the Miss Thailand crown, with three of their rivals missing. They will rejoin the race tomorrow.

”Normally the contest is held in Bangkok, but this time we chose Chiang Mai and we were confident that it would be safe and secure,” said Dr. Adisorn Suddee, director of the Miss Thailand 2020. ”This was the second day of the contest, and it was unexpected that the bridge would break.”

The more you know: Beauty pageants are a booming industry in Thailand, with events held regionally and nationally throughout the year. Women can win the equivalent of hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and prizes — as well as lucrative modeling and sponsorship agreements, according to Newsflare.

Meanwhile, this isn’t the first waterlogged event to go viral this year in Thailand: 75 people had to be evacuated from a capsized dinner cruise in August. The three-story wooden ferry known as the “High Season” sank in the Chao Phraya River. No injuries or deaths were reported at the scene.
