“#Brawl erupts after man chucks plant at NYC coffee cart”
The fracas unfolded at Astor Place and Lafayette Street in Noho when the man, wearing a winter hat, surgical mask, and a brown jacket over a lighter-colored hoodie walked across the street clutching the plant, with soil and roots still attached to the bottom.
A 37-year-old witness named Matt, who said he is a local doctor and resident, told The Post he was on the second floor of the nearby New York Sports Club when he saw the man walking with the plant and took a photo.
Matt went back to working out, but a short time later saw the man approach the coffee cart.
“I saw him take the whole plant and throw it at the back of the cart,” he said. “The plant exploded everywhere, dirt all over the floor.”
“The cart guy comes yelling with his hands out,” he added.
Then things got violent, he said.
“They twirl in circles hitting each other in the head,” Matt said. “The guy who threw the plant falls on the ground.”
The scuffle briefly stopped until the man who tossed the plant jumped back into action, popping open a yellow knife.
“The coffee cart guy threw hot water at him,” Matt said. “He was running toward the coffee guy’s cart and tried to cut the wires and he ran off.”
Cops briefly put took men into custody but let them go, according to the witness.
The NYPD could not confirm any arrests or details. Officials simply said they received a 911 call around 7:40 a.m. about an assault in progress there — with the caller saying someone hit him in the face and lip before fleeing.
However, a video from the scene shows that the man who had the plant was taken away in an ambulance.
“I’ll press charges!” he yelled.
Matt said his bicycle was stolen from outside the gym just two weeks ago, and he’s seeing an uptick in crime around the area.
