#What We Expect and What We Hope to See

“What We Expect and What We Hope to See”

In 2019, the first season of Good Omens was released on Amazon Prime. Based on a book of the same name, it received a lot of attention, both positively and negatively. However, neither the studio nor producers let the negative side of things get to them, and viewed the season as an overwhelming success. One thing was apparent for those who had read the book though—the first season was likely the last, as it had already used up all the published source material.

The show’s overwhelming popularity seems to have won out, however, as writer Neil Gaiman agreed to write a second season. Filming for this new season finished in early March, and as of now, no possible release date has been announced. We’re not completely in the dark, however, as we know there will be some returning characters and actors, and a few new actors have also been announced. As for what we might expect the plot to be, well, that’s a little more complicated. Here’s what we know so far about season two of Good Omens, and what we can hope will be coming.

New and Returning Cast and Characters

It’s no secret that both David Tennant and Michael Sheen are due to reprise their main character roles as Crowley and Aziraphale, respectively. Their return was teased on social media around the time filming began, and they have since been seen in some behind-the-scenes photos shared by Neil Gaiman. We also know of several angels returning to the show, as well as a few new ones. Jon Hamm is set to return as Archangel Gabriel, and returning with him are Doon Mackichan as Michael and Gloria Obianyo as Uriel. There are also two new actors and angels: Liz Carr as Saraqael, and Quelin Sepulveda as Muriel.

Other returning cast members include Paul Adeyefa, Michael McKean, Miranda Richardson, Maggie Service, Reece Shearsmith, and Nina Sosanya. It is not confirmed which of their characters may be returning or not, however, as we do know that not everyone will be returning to the same role they had played in season one. Actors like Service and Sosanya, for example, only appeared once or twice, serving as nuns for the satanic Chattering Order of St. Beryl that was only around to help bring the antichrist into the world, a storyline that seems to be fully extinguished now. It’s possible actors such as McKean and Richardson, who played recurring roles in season one, will reprise their roles, but for now, nothing else is confirmed.

There have also been a few new actors announced to join the cast. Shelly Con has been cast in an unannounced role, but will supposedly be “another key role from Hell.” Siân Phillips, Tim Downie, Andi Osho, and Alex Norton have all been cast as well, but their characters have yet to be revealed. Knowing that some returning cast were angels and demons in season one and most are reprising those roles, it could mean some of these new cast members will be among the angels and demons.

What We Hope To See In The Show

We don’t know much of anything about what the plot may be yet. The first season took up the entire plot of the first and only published book, so there is nothing else this new plot could be based on. All we know for sure is what little Gaiman has revealed in a statement about the next season: “We are back in Soho, and all through time and space, solving a mystery, which starts with an angel wandering through Soho, with no memory.”

We’ll certainly see the return of Aziraphale’s beloved bookshop in the streets of Soho, but otherwise, the plot could be anything. Knowing Gaiman is still actively involved in the project all but confirms that, at the very least, we can expect a similar feel to the story, including the comedy aspects of it.

It would make sense for some returning actors, such as McKean and Richardson, to reprise their roles instead of getting new characters this season. Sergeant Shadwell and Madame Tracy both had dealings with Aziraphale and Crowley in season one — Shadwell served the pair for years as an informant, though neither knew he worked for both of them, and Tracy hosted Aziraphale in her body for a while too after he was separated from his body, a moment that is surely hard to forget. Since Aziraphale and Crowley are intent on staying on earth and living among the humans, it would make sense that they would see the pair again.

All we can hope for among those who have been cast but whose characters have yet to be announced is that they will have the same individualism and stories as the other characters did in season one. Though we may not get to see recurring character Newton Pulsifer again, his unique problems with technology really helped him stand out and make the character feel real, as well as adding to the comedic aspect of his character. If all the new actors and characters are as well fleshed out as that, then season two will definitely be a treat.
