#Bizarre COVID-19 erotica novel goes viral

Call it love in the time of coronavirus.

A new erotic romance, “Kissing the Coronavirus,” by author M.J. Edwards (a pen name) has hit the digital shelves, and it is taking the internet by storm.

“She was supposed to cure the Coronavirus. Instead… she fell in love with it,” according to the synopsis on Amazon. “Dr Alexa Ashingtonford is a part of a crack team of scientists tasked with finding the cure to the devastating Coronavirus. Little did she know she would end up falling in love with it, in this steamy viral-erotica.

“Kissing Coronavirus is a steamy tale about forbidden love and dark desires come to life,” it continues.

Almost apologetically, the synopsis ends with this line: “The book is M.J. Edwards’ debut book, and is her attempt at trying to pay the bills following her job loss.”

According to a review by Caitsbooks on Goodreads, the story starts off with Dr. Ashingtonford trying to find a cure for COVID-19, but is turned on by the sample.

A selection cited by Caitsbooks reads: “Despite the devastation the virus was causing across the globe, Alexa felt a rush of excitement every time she picked up the Corona sample, like a pulsating, erect penis, desperate to unleash its devastation on anyone who touched it.”

The virus then infects an evil scientist, Dr. Bob Gurtlychung, who then uses an untried vaccine on himself in an attempt to rid his body of the virus … and the vaccine turns the bad male doctor into a green hulking COVID-19 sexy man-beast — who can finally fornicate with the horny Dr. Ashingtonford.

Some readers reviewed the debut harshly — one gave it a one-star review noting: “Here I am, I did it. I read it and oh boy. I don’t know what to say. I mean, this exists! It’s here! It’s a real thing that someone actually wrote!”

But others enjoyed it for the unintentional comedic value it brought — like the reviewer “C.S.” who wrote:

“Yes, I still gave it 5 stars. Do not go into this expecting a good read, either story or writing. You absolutely have to go into this expecting it to be worse than you imagine. … The fact that it was so bad it made me laugh like crazy is why I rated it so high. Here are a couple of gems to give you an idea: ‘Alexa edged back, pushing back until her back pushed back against the wall’;  He also lets out a ‘bellowing bellow.’”

C.S. then reiterates: “I repeat, do not go into this with a serious mindset. I believe (I really really hope) the author intentionally wrote this so badly to bring a good laugh in these very serious times. It made me laugh because of how truly bad it is so goal accomplished.”

Overall, the book had 121 ratings with an average of 3.5 stars — the majority of them are five-star or one-star reviews.

Meanwhile, an M.J. Edwards has written a note on Goodreads distancing himself from the hilariously awful time, noting: “I just became aware of a book, Kissing the Coronavirus, that appears under my pen name and apparently uses my picture as if I were the author. I am not, and I know nothing about this book.”
