“Blue Beetle Star Says the Movie Will Have Many Scenes in Spanish with Subtitles”
Blue Beetle was one of the movies originally announced as an HBO Max exclusive movie similar to the now canceled Batgirl movie, but just prior to that cancelation it was announced that Blue Beetle would be given a theatrical release and was going ahead as planned. While this surprised many, given that Batgirl is a much better-known character, the effort that has been put into making sure the movie delivers one of the DCEU’s most representative movies to date could be one of the reasons that it survived the recent upheaval at Warner Bros. Discovery.
While appearing on The Tonight Show, Sarandon was asked about her upcoming villain role as Victoria Kord in Blue Beetle, and while she was careful to not reveal any spoilers for the movie, the actress did explain that thanks to much of the cast being Mexican or Mexican-American a portion of the movie is in Spanish with subtitles. She said:
“What’s fabulous about it, it’s the first Latinx hero that has his own movie… Even better, all of the Mexican– because his family is Mexican and all of the actors were Mexican or Mexican-American, and it’s in Spanish, so it’s subtitled. […] I’m, of course, the bad guy! I’m the white military industrial complex [character] so I had a fabulous time. Because there’s nothing better than being bad!”
Blue Beetle Will Be The First Superhero Movie With A Latino Lead
While the number of Latino characters in superhero movies has grown over the last decade, Blue Beetle is the first to be led by one. The film also has a strong showing of Latino members behind the scenes too, with Peurto Rican Angel Manuel Soto helming the movie and Mexican writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer penning the film. While it is not clear from Sarandon’s comments exactly how much of the movie will be in Spanish, it sounds like quite a lot of the scenes involving lead character Jamie Reyes in his home setting will see the characters speaking in their local language.
As Hollywood continues to improve diversity and representation, allowing the characters of Blue Beetle to speak in the language they would be using the real world is another small step up the ladder. While it is unlikely that the true extent of the movie’s Spanish language segments will be known until a trailer is finally released, her revelation does suggest that Blue Beetle is certainly going to be a unique addition to the superhero genre.
