#Bill de Blasio’s ‘forgetful’ deal with the Democratic Convention

Mayor Bill de Blasio may have a future as a standup comic, or at least as a straight man: He actually claimed Monday he was just so focused on leading the city through the pandemic that he forgot the Democratic National Convention was starting that night.

That neatly skips over the fact that he utterly bombed in his party’s primaries — drawing minuscule crowds in Iowa and New Hampshire, failing to qualify for a single debate and having to drop out before a single vote was cast.

The four-month humiliation was a de Blasio classic in at least one other way: He managed to yet again break the campaign-finance rules, with illegal spending by one of his slush funds.

All of which may explain why the convention wrote him out of 2020 campaign history: De Blasio was conspicuously absent from Monday night’s video of Joe Biden rivals heaping praise on the winner.

All in all, it looks like the mayor cut a deal with his party’s leadership: I’ll forget about you if you forget about me.
