#Bill de Blasio’s bid to quash Mets sale is sleazy

We are tired of Mayor de Blasio’s sanctimonious self-indulgence long ago, but now he’s topped himself — secretly working to kill the deal to sell the Mets to Steve Cohen.

Major League Baseball is set to vote on the sale Friday, but the mayor is hoping to prevent it from going through by leveraging the fact that Citi Field sits on land the city partly owns. As The Post has reported, he’s told MLB he’ll do all he can to quash the sale.

It’d be bad enough if de Blasio was just still bitter about the 1986 World Series, when the Mets defeated his beloved Red Sox. But he has even dumber motives: He doesn’t like Cohen because he’s a right-leaning hedge-fund billionaire.

More, the mayor evidently aims to force a sale to the rival consortium led by Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez, whose political leanings are more to his liking.

Utterly lost in his considerations: the people of New York City — specifically, long-suffering Mets fans who pine for an owner who’ll invest the money (and managerial savvy) to produce a world championship or three.

Yes, the mayor pretends he’s upset that Cohen’s hedge fund paid big fines for insider trading. (Does he think A-Rod is a paragon of virtue — or is steroid abuse OK in de Blasio’s book?) But it was eight traders who actually pleaded to the crime, not Cohen himself.

Also looking to sink the deal is state Sen. Jessica Ramos, a former de Blasio City Hall aide. She openly favors the Latino couple of A-Rod and J-Lo — but mainly wants the Mets to make big “community benefits” payments to (politically connected) nonprofits.

This isn’t just outrageous; it reeks. Rather than focus on the multiple crises facing the city, de Blasio is wasting public resources on a (legal) blackmail scheme at his constituents’ expense.

And New York’s stuck with this twit for 14 more months.
