“This isn’t something we can allow,” the mayor told reporters — as the city continued to be wracked over the weekend by gun violence, which also included a 12-year-old boy being shot in the leg.
“To wake up this morning and learn that a 1-year-old child was killed on the streets of our city by gunfire is just so painful,” de Blasio said at a press conference, where many of his comments addressed city crime and current violent protests — yet with no Police Department representative in sight.
“It’s not acceptable. It’s not something we can ever look away from,” de Blasio said of the deadly crime surge.
“It’s something we have to address and stop,” he said.
“It’s just horrifying,” de Blasio added of the slaying of little Davelle Gardner, who died early Monday after being shot in the stomach at a barbecue outside a park in Bedford-Stuyvesant around 11:35 p.m. Sunday.
Three men also were hit by bullets in the shooting but expected to survive.
“Davelle was just starting his life, and his life was filled with promise, and now he’s gone,” the mayor said.
“Every resource is going to be used to find this killer. There’s no question in my mind that the NYPD will find them.”
De Blasio also mentioned, “In a different incident, a 12-year-old was shot in the leg” while standing on a street in Weeksville, Brooklyn, just after 9:10 p.m. Sunday. The boy is expected to survive.
“It’s heartbreaking,” the mayor said of the young shooting victims.
“So many guns out there — that is a New York tragedy and a national tragedy.
“We have to heal. We can’t let this happen in our city.”
