#Bill Burr Recalls The Mandalorian Co-Star Gina Carano’s Firing, Says It ‘Proved Her Point’

“Bill Burr Recalls The Mandalorian Co-Star Gina Carano’s Firing, Says It ‘Proved Her Point'”

Comedian and The Mandalorian star Bill Burr opened up on the infamous Gina Carano situation. After appearing in two seasons of the Star Wars series, Carano was let go from her role as Cara Dune due to problematic posts she had shared on social media. The firing was very controversial as many supported the decision while others slammed Disney and Lucasfilm, feeling that giving Carano the boot for weighing in on politics online was unfair.

You can put Burr in that latter category. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Burr reflected back upon what happened with Carano, with whom he appeared on The Mandalorian before her exit. Burr remembers “how cool she was as a person,” even though he personally didn’t share her beliefs on certain issues. He feels that Carano’s firing was unjust and, in fact, only proved the point that she was trying to make. Here’s what Burr said when asked if firing Carano was a fair move.

“No. I thought it was funny that the liberals proved her point. They just use outrage because they don’t like your politics. As someone who considers himself liberal, it’s disappointing to see the left become how the right used to be when they went after the Dixie Chicks after they criticized George W. Bush. There’s not a lot of people like that — most are just trying not to get in trouble — but there’s this small collection of lunatics — either on the right or the left, at any given moment – that cause hysteria. And now there’s so many [media outlets] that want eyeballs, they make money off advertising, that they give attention to these crazy fringe people.”

Bill Burr Stands By Gina Carano

Bill Burr goes on to comment he couldn’t really get involved at the time, as he didn’t want to further disrupt The Mandalorian. Looking at it now, he bemoans how someone can lose work based on their personal, political beliefs. He also comments on how other celebrities have come under fire for posts they had made on Twitter several years in the past, such as what happened with Kevin Hart stepping down as Oscars host. As far as Burr can tell, this only makes these celebrities seem that much better.

“The whole thing with Gina: You can’t chime in when the sh*t’s happening, because then you cause static for other people on the [show]. That somebody’s opinion — or their political beliefs — makes people try to destroy their ability to make a living, it’s f***ing bizarre to me. … And I love the whole idea that somebody can go back eight years in somebody’s Twitter feed and be like, ‘What about this?’ And nobody says, ‘You had to go back eight years to find something?! Sounds like this is a pretty good person if you had to go back eight f***ing years!’”

This isn’t the first time Burr has defended Carano. In March of last year, he said on his podcast that he had to watch what he says about the situation as someone who’s a part of The Mandalorian, but he still made it clear that he wasn’t happy about Carano’s dismissal. As Burr said at the time:

It’s a weird time….Unless she did some truly horrible sh*t or said overtly racist sh*t. I don’t know. I think there is just too many channels. And then you gotta do sensational sh*t…I don’t know what the f*ck it is. I’m on that f*cking show. Now, I gotta watch what the f*** I say… She was an absolute sweetheart. Super nice f***ing person. And you know whatever and somehow someone will take this video and they’ll make me say something else and try to get rid of my bald action figure…It’s how it is out there. It’s f***ing crazy times. People just waiting, laying in the weeds.”

Burr would not confirm if he will appear in the third season of The Mandalorian, though it’s safe to say we won’t be seeing Cara Dune in season 3.
