Pandemic journal: Joe’s Blinkered COVID Fix

The Wall Street Journal’s editors now know why Joe Biden’s advisers have kept him “under wraps”: The ex-veep vowed Sunday to shut the economy if there’s a COVID-19 surge. He’d “listen to the scientists,” he said. “But which scientists?” the Journal asks. “The experts have been wrong numerous times” and “often disagree.” And shutting the economy “can be more costly than the virus.” During President Trump’s six-week shutdown, “hospital beds in most of the country remained empty,” yet 30 million Americans filed for unemployment. Delayed medical visits and being “cooped up at home” are leading to other kinds of deaths. “A president has to consider the larger national interest, and that means listening to economists and health experts beyond epidemiologists. Mr. Biden’s comments misjudge the duty of a president.”

Conservative: Why Dems Home In on Character

“President Donald Trump gives you every reason to believe he’s not a good person,” admits Scott Jennings at USA Today, but “he has delivered on deeply held Republican priorities and offers a reasonable center-right path for the nation,” as well as producing a strong economy and major Middle East peace progress, even as he stands up to lawless rioters and China. Meanwhile, “Joe Biden is clearly past his prime” and may be unable “to say no to the radical voices who want to control the Democratic Party.” What Biden offers is “compassion at a time when we sorely need it.” He “would likely bring relief to our national political exhaustion.” So it’s easy to see why “Biden wants a pure referendum on Trump the person, never mind the policy implications of electing extremely liberal Democrats to high office.”

2020 desk: Don’s Blockbuster Agenda

The Trump campaign’s recently published second-term program, observes Scott McKay at The American Spectator, is “more like a performance agenda, which talks about things people on the center-right would like to see.” And that may be enough to deliver a strong victory come November. The agenda, stippled by bullet points, vows 10 million new jobs and 1 million new small businesses, thus presenting a “bright-line difference from the nutty Green New Deal narrative the Biden camp is spinning.” The agenda also promises a “return to normal” — that is, the pre-COVID way of life — at a time when Biden and other leading Democrats are falling over themselves to prove their pro-lockdown bona fides. The document also “talks about fully funding police departments and putting more cops on the street,” which, polls show, is a broadly popular position, notwithstanding media-supported anti-cop radicalism. Bottom line: “An agenda like this can speak for itself and win.”

Russiagate watch: Clinesmith’s Lied About Lying

Former FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith’s guilty plea “encapsulates the mendaciousness and malevolence of both ‘Crossfire Hurricane’ (the FBI’s Trump-Russia investigation) and the ‘collusion’ never-enders who continue to defend it,” argues National Review’s Andrew C. McCarthy. Clinesmith pleaded guilty to altering an e-mail indicating Team Trump aide Carter Page was a CIA source — but told the judge he “believed the information I was providing” was accurate. “His story is ridiculous,” blasts McCarthy. The FBI team knew “weeks before” they applied for the first warrant that “the theory that Page” was a Kremlin spy was “untenable.” There are “only two possible explanations for the FBI’s failure to inform the court that Page was working for the CIA”: “willful abuse of power or monstrous incompetence.”

Urban beat: Gotham Was Bound To Fall

At FoxNews.com, Jessica Curtis explains why she “fled” the Big Apple four years ago, “as many others are doing now.” It’s because, long before the recent riots, blue-state governors and mayors “not only cowered to anarchists but actively defended these radicals, instead of their own citizens” and cops. Leaders like Mayor de Blasio, who “has failed to defend his city and the NYPD at every turn.” And remember, “if Democrats can ruin New York, one of the great cities in the world, they can do it anywhere.”
