#Leonard Williams on Giants injury list with hamstring issue

August 2, 2020 | 10:03pm

Durable defensive tackle Leonard Williams is starting the most important year of his career with a minor injury.

The Giants designated Williams — who is their highest-paid player, due at least $16.2 million in salary on the franchise tag in 2020 — for the non-football injury list Sunday.

It’s more of a semantics and logistics transaction than anything else: Williams was dealing with a sore hamstring during his entrance physical, according to a source, and will train on the side with quarterback Alex Tanney (illness) and Tae Crowder (foot) rather than with the rest of the team.

Williams, 26, has not missed a game due to injury during his first six seasons, making 75 starts for the Jets and Giants. He is getting a second shot at a walk year to prove he is worthy of a big multi-year extension in free agency.

Wide receiver Da’Mari Scott joined more than 30 other players around the NFL, including Giants left tackle Nate Solder, by opting out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns. Scott, who appeared in five games mostly as a returner for the Giants last season, is eligible for a stipend of either $150,000 or $350,000 based on if he is determined to be “high risk” or not.

The Giants also released eight players, including four with regular-season experience: Running back Jonathan Hilliman, linebacker Chris Peace, safety Rashaan Gaulden and cornerback Shakial Taylor. Hilliman had the second-most carries (30) of any Giants running backs as a rookie from Rutgers last season, while Taylor was claimed off waivers from the Denver Broncos just five days ago.

The four rookies cut were quarterback Case Cookus, fullback George Aston, and linebackers Oluwole Betiku and Dana Levine. One of those roster spots went to rookie defensive back Jarren Williams, who had one interception in 12 games for Albany last season after transferring from St. Francis (Pa.).

Teams with 90-man rosters are required to split the squad for all weightlifting, conditioning exercises and walk-throughs to help with social distancing. Trimming the roster to 80 — a requirement by Aug. 17 — allows the Giants to bring the full team together this week.

The Giants are carrying 81 players (running back Sandro Platzgummer has an international pathway exemption from counting against roster limit.) Linebacker Markus Golden is expected to re-sign soon as early as Tuesday, meaning another move is coming.
