#’Final’ Evangelion Anime Film Weekend Jumps Over 900% Over Previous in Japan

With Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time, and its updated “3.0+1.01” version, coming up on its final legs in Japanese theaters, the release of the new version on June 12, as well as the new theatrical gifts for moviegoers, helped the “final” Evangelion film from Anno reach a box office gross 960.5% higher than the weekend before, giving it a perfect last run before it finishes up its theatrical run in Japanese cinemas.

As of June 13, Evangelion 3.0+1.0’s 98th day in theaters, the Khara-produced anime film had reached 8,965,306,780 yen (US

$82.04 million) at the Japanese box office and a weekend that saw a 960.5% increase in box office takings and 939.8% increase in tickets sold for a total of 5,867,510. Over the past week, Evangelion grossed around 290 million yen (US$2.64 million), with a majority of the box office takings coming from the weekend when Evangelion 3.0+1.01 released.

The film is only 290 million yen from breaking into the Top 10 anime films of all-time in Japan, getting close to Arrietty’s 9.25 billion yen ($89.97 million) gross, though it’s unlikely to make that mark unless the film continues running in Japanese theaters like is has over the last week–which it won’t unless another push is made by the distributors of the film.

Evangelion 3.0+1.0 finally opened in Japan after being delayed twice due to the coronavirus pandemic on March 8, breaking franchise records on the first day and eventually becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise in Japan in less than a month, then the highest-grossing worldwide in 35 days. It is the longest film in the franchise (not including compilations or special screenings). An updated version of the film, Evangelion 3.0+1.01, was released in Japanese theaters on June 12. There is no word yet on an international release of the film.
