The final trailer for Netflix’s adaptation of The Sandman has arrived giving the best look yet at the wild array of characters to have left from the pages of Neil Gaiman’s graphic novels. Released following The Sandman panel at San Diego Comic-Con, the trailer delivered the most in depth look at the stunning worlds realized for the series as well as new looks at Tom Sturridge’s Morpheus, Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer Morningstar, Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death, Jenna Coleman as Constantine, Boyd Holbrook as The Corinthian, as well as a first look at Mark Hamill’s character, Mervyn Pumpkinhead and the voice over of Patton Oswalt as Matthew the Raven.

The Sandman focuses on the king of dreams, Morpheus, who escapes a century of imprisonment to find his artifacts of power have been scattered across many universes and the Kingdom of the Dreaming is in ruins. As one of the seven Endless beings, Dream embarks on a journey to restore his home as he seeks the help of his siblings, while coming up against his nemesis, The Corinthian. As one of Dream’s nightmare creations, The Corinthian has assumed the role of a serial killer in the real world, and the trailer revealed his comic-accurate appearance in all its terrifying glory.

Neil Gaiman Has Waited A Long Time To Realize The Sandman On Screen

For anyone familiar with The Sandman graphic novels, the sheer scope of Gaiman’s vision is something that would have been unfathomable to even attempt to adapt in the past, and it appears that has been one of the things that has held The Sandman back for so long. Recently, Gaiman explained how he has wanted to make the show for so long, but didn’t want to see it become his “Howard The Duck.” He previously said:

“I didn’t have faith that we’d always get here. but I had faith that the important thing was to stop bad versions being made. Once a bad version is made, you never quite come back from that. It may sound silly, but when I was 14 or 15, my favorite comic was Howard The Duck. Steve Gerber, Gene Colan, Frank Brunner, satire, madness, glory… I was so excited when I heard George Lucas was making a movie. And then A New Breed Of Hero [the 1986 movie’s alt-title] came out. Howard The Duck became a bad joke. I never wanted that to happen to Sandman and I saw scripts that would have made that happen.”

Over the last decade, Gaiman has seen many versions of The Sandman being suggested, including a script that came from The Boys creator Erik Kripke, but it did not fit with the vision he wanted for the series. Now, having been patient for so long Gaiman has been able to bring to life his vision in the way he wanted to, and we are now only a couple of weeks away from discovering if it has all been worth it. The Sandman arrives on Netflix on August 5.
