Ex Machina is a mind-bending science fiction story that showcases the evolution of artificial intelligence. Oscar Issac plays Nathan Bateman, the CEO of a successful search engine company, who enlists the help of programmer Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson) to carry out the Turing test for an A.I. named Ava (Alicia Vikander). The movie is quite suspenseful as tensions grow, and we watch as Caleb tries to figure out who to trust. The movie is a fascinating look into A.I. and what we can expect to come as technology evolves in the real world. Ex Machina explores what it means to be self-aware as a human and as a robot, and Vikander gives a convincing performance as the artificial Ava.

A24 and Sean Baker go hand in hand and their collaboration has produced some very thought-provoking films different from anything else on the market. The Florida Project explores the life of 6 year-old Moonie (Brooklynn Prince) and her friends as they spend their summer days living in motels on the outskirts of Disney World. What this film does, like many other A24 projects, is give us a look into real, gritty characters that we don’t normally see on screen. We watch as Moonie and her mom (Bria Vinaite) hustle each day to make rent, and the film features some of the best young actor performances ever. Willem Dafoe earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of the motel manager Bobby.

A24 has introduced us to several new filmmakers including the talented Greta Gerwig, who wrote and directed one of the greatest coming of age stories of our generation. The film follows the story of high school student Lady Bird (Saoirse Ronan) as she navigates love, friendship, and personal identity. One of the most endearing parts of the film is the honest and loving relationship between Lady Bird and her mother (Laurie Metcalf). Lady Bird is a perfect blend of comedy and drama and features several fine performances.

A24 producers are masters at creating gritty, violent thrillers. Green Room follows the aftermath of a punk rock band witnessing a murder at a venue filled with white supremacists. They are held captive by a group of skinhead psychopaths, led by the sinister Darcy (Patrick Stewart). The film creates tension and suspense as we watch the band plotting their escape. The dialogue is sharp, and the performances are fantastic as they portray the dreadful situation that they were roped into. Although it is a violent film, with some scenes that are hard to watch, this is a must-see for anybody who loves thrillers.

A24 has produced several great horror films, but Ari Aster’s Hereditary is by far their scariest work to date. The combination of Ari Aster and A24 is a perfect fit, and we can’t wait to see what they make next. Hereditary is a horrifying film about a family dealing with grief after the unexpected death of the youngest child Charlie (Millie Shapiro). As the matriarch, Annie (Toni Collette), attempts to make contact with Charlie in the afterlife, a sinister force begins to disrupt the lives of the family. The movie is terrifying from start to finish and features one of Collette’s greatest performances to date.

A24 is a studio that is not afraid to take risks and create meaningful, thought-provoking stories. The Safdie brothers’ Good Time is a thrilling story about Connie Nikas (Robert Pattinson) attempting to get his brother out of jail after a botched bank robbery. The film is filled with vibrant images, original camera techniques, and a dynamite score that brings it all together. The film has a lot of heart, in terms of the relationship between the Nikas brothers, and the film basically reinvented the career of Pattinson. Barry Jenkin’s Oscar-winning film was a groundbreaking piece of art.
