#Best Characters in the Movie, Ranked

“Best Characters in the Movie, Ranked”

“Do you ever look at someone and wonder, ‘What is going on inside their head?’” If so, then boy, does Pixar have a movie for you! In 2015, the animation studio gave audiences a look into the mind of an 11-year-old girl named Riley when it debuted its 15th motion picture Inside Out. As she relocates from Minnesota to San Francisco, Riley realizes that adjusting to a new life is harder than she thought, especially after her most important emotion Joy goes missing.
The movie centered on her five anthropomorphic emotions: Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust with each character visually depicting the feeling they possessed. As Pixar movies tend to be, Inside Out was a box office success and, per Deadline, became the seventh highest grossing film of the year. It may have been geared towards children, but Inside Out’s raw poignant storytelling made it a certified tear-jerker for adults as well. With their colorful appearances, each of Riley’s emotions were easy to decipher and hard to ever forget. Here’s how the best characters of the film rank.

6 Fear

This scrawny, paranoid, purple twig is voiced by Bill Hader. Fear is, well, fear is what keeps Riley from trying new things like making new friends or discussing her feelings with her parents. But most importantly, it also keeps her from getting into anything dangerous. Fear’s jitteriness is a sight to see; he goes as far as to attempt leaving Riley’s head when things don’t go as planned. At the end of the day, Fear is always there to ensure Riley’s safety, even if he is a little too paranoid.

5 Disgust

The sassy, bright green meanie Disgust was played by Mindy Kaling. If there’s one thing Disgust hates, it’s surely broccoli. Disgust comes across as attitudinal, which is displayed in her interactions with her fellow emotions and anyone in real life too. Still, as she is living in Riley’s head, she wants what’s best for her. After all, she is the one who helps Joy and Sadness get back into headquarters, by infuriating Anger and using his flames to pierce a hole into the wall.

4 Anger

Lewis Black provided the voice of Anger, a short, red, frequently furious emotion of Riley’s. Whether baby Riley is angrily rejecting broccoli or preteen Riley is having a pubescent outburst, Anger is there to fuel the chaos. Dressed in office clothes perhaps to allude to the anger of working in a corporate department, Anger’s explosions consist of actual fire blowing from the top of his head. All of Riley’s emotions have their comedic moments but Anger’s ability to generate laughter whilst being agitated makes him all the more iconic. Fun fact: he also knows a curse word.

3 Bing Bong

“Who’s your friend who likes to play? Bing Bong, Bing Bong.” This longtime imaginary friend of Riley’s is part elephant, part dolphin and made from cotton candy. Voiced by Richard Kind, Bing Bong had always had plans to go to the moon with Riley until, of course, she grew older and forgot about him. He joins forces with Joy and Sadness to make it back to headquarters, in hopes of restoring her memory of him but when things go awry, Bing Bong makes a self-sacrifice to ensure Joy can return to Riley, even if it means the young girl will forget him forever. His last words, “Take her to the moon for me,” are hard to sit through without sobbing your eyes out.

2 Sadness

The second of Riley’s emotions came exactly 33 seconds after the first. The second feeling a baby Riley had ever felt was unhappiness and that’s where the blue, glasses-donning pile of gloom comes in. Despite being permanently somber, Phyllis Smith’s Sadness is actually quite funny. Her miserable demeanor makes for funny lines about how life is just the worst sometimes. Initially, Sadness seems like the worst of Riley’s emotions, especially when her first day at a new school is approaching and Joy doesn’t want her to ruin anything. But Sadness proves that it’s okay to feel sad sometimes – every so often you have bad days, but luckily the people who care for you are there to make you feel better.

1 Joy

The first emotion to appear and the predominant one of the bunch is the bright ray of sunshine Joy. Joy has the biggest duty of them all. Without her, Riley wouldn’t be happy. Amy Poehler brought life to the bundle of delight that illuminates the entire film. Throughout the movie, Joy continually proves that Riley is number one in her life. She tries to cheer her up when she moves, changing her bad dreams into good ones and ensuring she has a perfect first day of school. Joy makes it her mission to make sure Riley is always in a good mood. When she and Sadness get away from headquarters, she refuses to give up and does everything in her power to make it back to headquarters. Joy is constantly positive, her mood only changes for the worst when she thinks she can no longer help Riley. But with her determination, she does anyway.
