“Best British Crime Dramas of 2021, Ranked”

There has been an array of gritty, shocking, and brilliant crime dramas over the years, TV shows where we have tried to guess who’s side everyone is on, who murdered who, what will happen next, and how to put together the missing pieces of the puzzle. In particular, there have been plenty of great British miniseries and series with tension, diversity, shock, plot twists, betrayal, mysterious characters, gritty storylines, and a whole load of binge-worthiness. 2021 was a great year specifically for British crime dramas, an exciting year of television that saw the return of some old classics, as well as some fresh new drama. Let’s take a look at what the UK gave us in 2021.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

7 Bloodlands

When police officer DCI Tom Brannick (James Nesbitt) finds a link between a mysterious kidnapping and an old cold case that is a bit too personal, he must fight with his past to find the answer. Bloodlands is full of twists and unexpected connections, as the show links together decades of events throughout Northern Ireland with a sociopolitical urgency. After every shock and every discovery, viewers are left on the edge of their seat with what feels like a million questions.

6 Vigil

From the producers of Line of Duty, Vigil follows Suranne Jones as Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva, as she finds herself baffled with an unexpected case of a death on the HMS Vigil. As a result she has to deal with the string of consequences, like the conflict it causes between the Royal Navy and MI5. Under pressure to solve the case, we feel just as stressed as Amy through her investigation in this tense, efficient show.

5 The Pembrokeshire Murders

This three-part drama miniseries is based on the true story of The Pembrokeshire Murders committed by serial killer John Cooper. Siblings Richard and Helen Thomas were found dead in their home in 1985; four years later, history repeated itself, and married couple Peter and Gwenda Dixon mysteriously went missing as they were on a walk in Pembrokeshire, and were later found dead around the coast.

In the short but sweet (and shockingly tense) series, we watch a wild goose chase and a race against time to catch the killer before he strikes again. When the case is re-opened, a new detective is on a mission to find Wales’ most lethal killer.

4 Stay Close

No one wants to be haunted by their past, especially if it’s at risk of ruining your marriage. But in Harlan Coben’s Stay Close, it cannot be avoided. Those of us who are fans of Coben’s The Stranger will know that his book-to-screen adaptations make for great material, shows where one plot twist leads to the next, and it’s almost impossible to turn it off. The storyline is intense and totally gripping, and it does a great job of shocking us completely in every episode, never being able to guess ahead. With humor, heartbreak, a hidden past, a mysterious disappearance, and even a false identity, Stay Close is one shocking ride.

3 Time

Stephen Graham never disappoints, and he stars alongside Sean Bean in the hard-hitting drama Time. This series is particularly thought-provoking as it focuses on the UK prison system and each individual’s different experiences. When Mark (Bean), husband, father and teacher, is riddled with guilt after accidentally killing an innocent man, he spends four years in prison and is not prepared for what he will endure.

Prison officer Eric (Graham) finds it hard to protect the inmates under his charge when there are little resources to do so, and in the most dangerous place, full of dangerous people, he becomes worried that he is showing too many of his weaknesses. Time is brutal and harsh, but is also a touching and difficult meditation on family.

2 Unforgotten – Season Four

ITV introduced us to Unforgotten initially in 2015, and fans couldn’t get enough of DCI Cassie Stuart and the rest of the team of London detectives. Throughout the first three seasons, each case was totally unique, and we were given a new list of characters that were all gradually connected to a murder case. As the mystery unfolded, we were left with the aftereffects of the crime and some terrible and gritty consequences. Season four was released in 2021 with some of its most shocking and captivating episodes. We followed Cassie once again in the fallout of some horrific murders, with even more emotionally challenging stories that grasp the viewers even harder.

1 Line of Duty – Season Six

Season six of the crime drama Line of Duty had one of the most talked about TV endings of 2021. With mixed feelings about the finale, viewers were shocked, but the reveal of H wasn’t as specific as some would have hoped for. Leaving it open for our imaginations to run wild was what made this series frustratingly fantastic and purely brilliant. Throughout all six seasons, we dove head first into the darkest side of the police as we followed the journeys and disasters of DS Steve Arnott, DI Kate Flemming, and Superintendent Ted Hastings through the AC-12 Unit. In possibly one of the most binge-worthy and gripping crime dramas, the bent coppers and grisly crimes of Line of Duty managed to have us all completely gobsmacked.
