“#Benedict Cumberbatch Addresses Worries Over Doctor Strange 2 Reshoots”
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is currently undergoing reshoots, and Benedict Cumberbatch has been explaining the reason behind them.
The Sorcerer Supreme has some tough times coming in the next few months, which has now been suggested to be the result of Peter Parker’s desire to be forgotten by the world after his identity as Spider-Man was revealed in the closing moments of Spider-Man: Far From Home. As Strange seems to instigate the creation of the Multiverse in the latest Spider-Man adventure, allowing the breakdown of timelines and alternate realities that were touched on and set up by the Loki series, it is expected that his second solo movie will deal with the aftermath of that in a big way.
While Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has managed to keep virtually everything about it under wraps so far, there has been speculation that the movie may have been undergoing re-writes which have led to the reshoots now underway. However, Benedict Cumberbatch has revealed that is not the case and there is a much simpler reason for the additional filming.
In the latest edition of Empire Magazine (coming via Doctor Strange 2 Updates), the actor said, “We’re in the middle of reshoots and we’re working incredibly hard to make a schedule work to realize the full potential of the film – bits that we want to do better but also bits that were just impossible to do on the day because of logistics, COVID, etc. We were so delayed in production because of that. Luckily, not during production too much. Although everything is just a little slower.”
Movie reshoots are a regular occurrence on big Hollywood movies, with a variety of reasons behind them. Over the years, the perceived meaning of “we are doing reshoots” has taken on a negative aura, mainly thanks to the likes of Justice League, Solo: A Star Wars Story and Suicide Squad, which all saw last minute changes being made to the movies that didn’t always have the desired effect when put in front of audiences.
However, the most common reason behind reshoots is simply that once the movie is edited together, there could be a shot or two that aren’t usable and need to be filmed again. Given the circumstances many movies have been filmed in for the last year, it is hardly surprising that the latest Doctor Strange adventure, being so intricately connected with other Marvel movies and shows could require such touch-up shots to make sure everything is just right.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness also features Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, and even though there are plenty of theories about how the newly empowered WandaVision character will figure in proceedings, there is nothing much known about how her role will aid or hinder the good Doctor in his work. All will be revealed in good time when the film arrives in cinemas on May 6th, 2022.
