#Doctor Strange 2’s Xochitl Gomez Dishes on Sam Raimi and the Creepy Scarlet Witch

“Doctor Strange 2’s Xochitl Gomez Dishes on Sam Raimi and the Creepy Scarlet Witch”

During the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s headline-stealing time in San Diego Comic-Con 2022’s Hall H, not just one but two new Avengers movies were announced: Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, to be helmed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton, and Avengers: Secret Wars. While some have speculated that this could be based on the 1984 comic event of that name, it’s much more likely that it will be based on the 2015 Secret Wars, thanks to a certain plot point in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

In Multiverse of Madness, Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) visited Earth-838. There, they were informed of events called “incursions” by the Illuminati. In the panels of Marvel Comics, the 2013 New Avengers series by Jonathan Hickman, Steve Epting, Rick Magyar, Frank D’Armata, Joe Caramagna, and Jock followed the Illuminati as they dealt with incursions. These events lead directly to the 2015 Secret Wars event.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

For this reason, Multiverse of Madness may be more important to the future of the MCU than some might have initially realized. In an interview with ComicBook.com, Gomez shared more details about her experience on the set to help advertise the movie’s arrival on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD. According to Gomez on Phase Zero, the ComicBook.com podcast, “We’ve only seen a brief introduction to America, and I’m very proud of how she’s been received and that people love her and want to see more of her. It really warms my heart. I feel like she’s got lots of backstory that’s just waiting to be told, and she’s got more to discover about herself, and her powers, and her moms, of course.”

Sam Raimi Is ‘A Very Collaborative Guy’

“My biggest lesson was that [director Sam Raimi] was a very collaborative guy,” Gomez told Phase Zero, the ComicBook.com podcast. “He was not afraid to just be like, more fear, more terror, more tears, just telling me that kind of thing.” She went on to explain that this penchant was especially on display when it came to the character of the Scarlet Witch, played by Elizabeth Olsen: “he’s not afraid to really tap into that darkness, especially with Wanda… There’s some things that weren’t actually in the movie that she did that were just so creepy, and camera angles and stuff was just so cool.”

Gomez concluded the interview by saying that the characters she most hopes that America will encounter antagonists like Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors) in future MCU projects.
