#Base-running blunders continue to haunt Mets

The Mets were burned by bad baserunning at the end of Saturday’s loss to the Blue Jays, when Amed Rosario was inexplicably picked off first base for the final out.

On Sunday, the gaffe came early, but was also pivotal in a second straight defeat, when Todd Frazier got tagged out in a rundown between third and home in the top of the first inning of a 7-3 defeat at Sahlen Field in Buffalo.

It came after Dom Smith’s RBI single and stopped a potential rally. And after the first, the Mets couldn’t get much going against Toronto left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu.

“[Saturday] night, we beat ourselves and today, it started early with that play on the bases, where we gave [them] an out,’’ manager Luis Rojas said. “We had momentum building where we could have scored a couple more runs versus Ryu. With Pete [Alonso] coming up, we run into an out again to finish the first inning.”

Smith’s hit to center scored Jeff McNeil and on the throw home, Smith headed toward second, knowing no one was covering first and he was in no danger of being tagged out.

Frazier, though, thought first base was covered and Smith was about to be in a rundown of his own.

“It was a misread on his part,’’ Rojas said of Frazier.

“I honestly thought he was getting in a rundown because usually the second baseman goes to first,’’ Frazier said. “I probably should have thought about it a little bit more. But at the same time, it’s one of those things, if there’s a rundown, maybe I can get home and go a little more forward to the plate. But things happen.”

The Mets didn’t score again until the top of the eighth, when they were down by six runs following their bullpen’s implosion in the bottom of the sixth.

The baserunning blunders in back-to-back games are just the latest examples of poor work on the basepaths this season.

Billy Hamilton, since designated for assignment, made a pair of costly miscues on the bases before he was jettisoned.

“We’re a team that can hit, but if we keep giving outs on the bases, we’re gonna minimize that,’’ Rojas said. “We need to clean it up … I want these guys to be aggressive, but I want them to be aware of what’s going on, so we can prevent these types of outs.”

And they’re running out of time.

With Sunday’s loss, the Mets have just 13 games left and they are 2 ½ games back in the wild-card race.

Frazier noted they don’t trail in the race by much, but have serious work to do to leapfrog the necessary teams to get into the postseason.

“Crazier things have happened,’’ Frazier said.
