BAFTA Games Awards: ‘Astro Bot’ Tops Winners

Platform game Astro Bot led the winners of the 2025 BAFTA Games Awards, which were handed out in London on Tuesday evening, earning five honors, including for best game of the year. The psychological horror game Still Wakes the Deep received three gaming BAFTAs, including two performance honors.

Action-adventure Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II had led the pack with 11 nominations, ahead of Astro Bot and Still Wakes the Deep with six each, with the likes of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Lego Horizon Adventures, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth also earning nods. All contenders for the honors were released between Nov. 25, 2023, and Nov. 15, 2024. 

During Tuesday evening’s ceremony in London, Bridgerton star Adjoa Andoh took to the stage to hand the BAFTA for a performer in a leading role in a game to Alec Newman for his role as Cameron McLeary in Still Wakes the Deep.

Japanese composer Yoko Shimomura received the BAFTA Fellowship during the BAFTA Games Awards ceremony for her contribution to the games industry. She has composed “countless era-defining video game soundtracks enjoyed by millions of players worldwide, including the Kingdom Hearts series, Final Fantasy XV, Mario & Luigi,” and more, the British Academy said.

Performing arts and entertainment trade union Equity used the BAFTA Games Awards to call on gaming industry bosses to improve pay and conditions for performers. “Equity is here to make sure the poor practice frequently reported by Equity members does not continue to be ignored by industry leaders,” said John Barclay, Equity’s assistant general secretary for recorded media. “The video games industry is worth over £7 billion ($8.9 billion) in the U.K. alone, and in attendance tonight are bosses from some of the richest companies in the world. Yet these companies continue to ignore Equity’s calls to work with us to introduce union-negotiated agreements in the U.K. that would improve pay, terms and conditions for our members – something that is normal practice in the U.S.”

Last year, Baldur’s Gate 3 led the winners at the with five BAFTA honors, while Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Viewfinder and Alan Wake 2 won two awards each.

BAFTA and Digital Cinema Media recently launched a national cinema advertising campaign that promotes and celebrates the art of storytelling in video games. Susan Wokoma stars alongside Baldur’s Gate 3 duo Samantha Béart and Neil Newbon, Doug Cockle (Witcher 3) and more in the trailer directed by Jennifer Sheridan.
