#AX Cinema Nights Celebrates 40th Anniversary of Vampire Hunter D Anime Film with New Screenings in April 2025

Iconic Events Releasing and Anime Expo have confirmed that it will be screening a special 40th anniversary screening of the 1985 anime film Vampire Hunter D as part of its AX Cinema Nights lineup. It lists the film as screening only on April 9, 10, and 13 later this year. Tickets are scheduled to go on sale starting February 12, 2025.
AX Cinema Nights describes the synopsis of the film as:
In the year 12,090 AD, technology and the supernatural have overtaken the world, leaving the land desolate and despotic. The remnants of humanity are scattered into small communities and live in fear of vampires who compose the ruling Nobility. When Count Magnus Lee tastes the blood of Doris Lang, she is forcibly chosen to be his next wife. In an effort to escape her ill-gotten fate, she hires a mysterious vampire hunter known only as D, who comes from a peculiar lineage.
Vampire Hunter D was originally released in Japan as an OVA film on December 21, 1985. Sentai Filmworks licensed the film for release in English in 2015 and released the latest Blu-ray disc for it in 2022. Streamline Pictures first released the film in the English language in 1992. Another anime film, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, was released in 2000.
Toyoo Ashida directed the film, with a screenplay written by Yasushi Hirano and a musical score by Tetsuya Komuro. Ashi Productions handled the film’s animation production.
The film is based on the long-running dark fantasy novel series written by Hideyuki Kikuchi, which has been published since 1983 and included illustrations by Yoshitaka Amano. Dark Horse Comics publishes the novels in English under its DH Press imprint.

Other upcoming anime films set to be screened under the AX Cinema Nights programming lineup include Cowboy Bebop The Movie from February 5, 6, and 9 and Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack on March 12 and 16.
Previous films that were released on AX Cinema Nights include Ninja Scroll last September, Metropolis (2001) last November, and Paprika earlier this month. Three Mobile Suit Gundam films also premiered in theaters throughout October 2024.
