An Australian dad is missing after a freight ship capsized off the coast of Japan when it reached rough waters caused by a typhoon.

Lukas Orda, 25, who has a six-month-old baby, is among the 42 crew members missing after the vessel sank Wednesday west of the Japanese island of Amami Oshima in the East China Sea, Australian outlet 7News reported.

The livestock ship, which was carrying 5,800 cows, was set to arrive in China next Friday but encountered rough weather from Typhoon Maysak.

Only one crew member, a Filipino chief officer, has been rescued, while dozens of others remain lost at sea.

They include 38 crew members from the Philippines, two from New Zealand and two from Australia, officials said.

The survivor, who is now hospitalized, told rescuers that the engine stalled on the ship, then the vessel sank after being struck by a powerful wave.

Coast guard regional spokesman Yuichiro Higashi said the typhoon has since passed the area and the continuing search efforts should not be hampered by weather.
