#Australian bar forced to ban famed emus for stealing food and drinks

An emu walks into a bar…well, not anymore.

An outback Australia watering hole has barred the big birds from the premises following a series of flaps, according to reports.

The emus, Australia’s largest native bird, were originally raised near Queensland’s remote Yaraka Hotel, and have become a local tourist attraction, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

But as they grew older, they began climbing the steps into the pub and wreaking more havoc than any over-served patron by stealing customers’ food, drinks and car keys — and relieving themselves inside.

“We didn’t really want them becoming patrons in the hotel,” the hotel’s owner, Chris Gimblett, told ABC. “Because when they do get in here, they behave a bit badly.”

The solution was to erect ropes in front of the joint’s doors, along with signs reading, “Emus have been banned from this establishment for bad behaviour. Please let yourself in through the emu barrier and then reconnect please!”

So far, the ropes have helped solve the emu emergency — for the most part.

“They still hang around each gate, hoping that they’ll be able to slip in when someone opens it up,” Gimblett told ABC. “But so far we are winning the war.”
