Attention, wrestling fans: WWE launches free streaming network

June 1, 2020 | 11:38am

Watch out, Disney — wrestling is coming to take the crown for the lowest-cost streamer.

On Monday, WWE announced that a free version of its streaming network is launching, carrying over 15,000 wrestling shows, including “Monday Night Raw” and “Friday Night SmackDown.” It will also have new programs such as “Raw Talk” (out every Monday night), “Ride Along,” “Monday Night War” and highlight shows such as “Top 10” and “The Best of WWE.”

The regular version of the service, which launched in 2014 carrying a mixture of live and on-demand wrestling programming, costs $9.99 per month.

This isn’t the first time WWE has made its content available for free — it did so earlier in March, ahead of its flagship event “WrestleMania” (which had no audience this year, due to the coronavirus pandemic). WWE Media executive vice president Jayar Donlan told The Hollywood Reporter that this works as a strategy to get new fans hooked, as the WWE Network hit 2.1 million subscribers by April.

So while it’s a strange time to be a sports fan due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it turns out that wrestling fans can have the last laugh.
