This screen grab taken from dashboard camera video shows Rayshard Brooks (left) and Officer Garrett Rolfe (right) pointing Tasers at one another, while Officer Devin Brosnan is seen getting up after a struggle among the three men
Witnesses said that “the officers went and put on plastic gloves and picked up their shell casings after they killed him — before rendering aid,” attorney L. Chris Stewart said at a press conference Saturday, a day after Brooks was shot dead trying to avoid a drunk-driving arrest.
“They appear to be caring more about covering their tracks than providing aid,” he said of the officers, Garrett Rolfe and Devin Brosnan.
“Aid that could have saved his life if allegedly he was taken to the hospital and died in surgery. But they didn’t give that to him.”
Instead, the officers were seen on videos standing around as father-of-four Brooks “lays there dying,” Stewart claimed of Friday night’s shooting outside a Wendy’s that was later torched by protesters.
“One kicks him and flips him over,” Stewart claimed of the officers.
“We counted 2 minutes and 16 seconds before they even checked his pulse,” he insisted of numerous videos of the deadly encounter. “And people wonder why everyone’s mad.”
Rolfe — who allegedly fired the fatal shots — was fired late Saturday, while Brosnan was put on administrative leave. Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields also resigned over the fatal incident.
Stewart called for charges to be filed against the officers.
“Are you not tired of cases like this happening?” he asked. “People are sick of watching black men murdered,” he said, saying that the “one thing that nobody can disagree with” is that “it shouldn’t have happened.”
