#People are naming their new pets after deadly COVID-19

Get ready to hear some pandemic pet names at your local dog park this year.

New pet owners have tapped into the 2020 zeitgeist to name their newly adopted dogs and cats, according to Rover, with some dubbing their furry quarantine buddies with names like “Covi,” “Rona” and “Corona.”

The site for pet sitters and dog walkers released its annual list, the 100 Most Popular Male and Female Dog Names, for 2020 and found that pandemic-inspired names were trending for new pawrents, with the moniker Covi up 1,159% in popularity, followed by Rona (69%), Corona (24%) and Covie.

“Honorable mentions for the handful of dogs and cats named COVID and Fauci, and a very special shoutout to these two unique pets: a dog named Rona Von Covid and a cat named Dr. Fauci,” wrote Rover in its report. Another pandemic pastime also made its way onto the list, with the name Sourdough gracing the list for the first time after the much-hyped bread-baking trend.

Pet adoptions were through the roof from the start of the pandemic, with many shelters across the US reporting a spike in inquiries since lockdown began, forcing people to work from home and stay indoors. As Rover noted in the report, adoption rates soared and many New York shelters reported they ran out of adoptable pets in March. The Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) said it got more than 5,000 applications to foster pets in March alone.

Michelle, who lives in Ottawa and declined to give her last name, told The Post she adopted her now-9-month-old cockapoo in April with her sister Laura, landing on the name Covie for the precious pup.

“We were thinking of creative names and thought that it would be kind of funny to name her after the situation that we are in,” she said. “We thought it was a fun way to remember exactly when we got her and nice family time we have had.”

Michelle said she had a few other name options for Covie, who has an Instagram page, but “nothing stuck.”

“When we picked her up we immediately started calling her Covie and loved it,” she added.

She said she’s gotten some negative reactions to the name — “Yes we have had people roll their eyes and not like the name” — but decided on it anyway to commemorate the time.

“They think of COVID as a negative time, which it is in some areas, but we like to look at the positives which are a lot more family time and quality time we never got since my sister and I went off to university seven years ago,” she said. In Canada, cases of the coronavirus are significantly fewer than the US, though numbers were on the rise after Canadian Thanksgiving in October.

But it wasn’t just the coronavirus that sparked name ideas for pet owners. Others tapped into the treasure trove that this year brought along with it, including the “Tiger King” craze. Rover said the name Carol, after the kooky Carole Baskin, was trending up 46% in dog names — and they even spotted the name Joe the Exotic. Other pop culture phenomenon shows like “The Witcher” and “The Mandalorian” also proved popular for pet names, with Geralt of “The Witcher” trending up 9,308% and Mando up 2,658%.

The Kardashian klan didn’t fare as well in the popularity contest, though. Dogs named Khloe, Kourtney, Kim, Kylie and Rob were all on the decline, said Rover — a fitting trend now that the show is ending.

Other celebrities had better luck. Rover declared it the “year of Keanu,” as dogs named after “The Matrix” actor Reeves are on the rise along with pets named Betty White.

The top five male and female dog names, however, told a different story, with more traditional names reigning supreme. Bella was the No. 1 female dog name, followed by Luna, Lucy, Daisy and Lola. For males, the top spot went to Max, followed by Charlie, Cooper, Buddy and Milo.
