“#Anthony Rizzo drops pop-up, Manny Machado smashes home run on next pitch”
Anthony Rizzo probably wants this one back.
In the bottom of the eighth inning during the Cubs’ game against the Padres, Manny Machado popped a pitch up to the first base side of the infield. Rizzo, Chicago’s four-time Gold Glove first baseman, trotted across the infield to attempt a play.
Though he had a fair amount of distance to cover, he still had a fairly easy catch to make. But he flubbed it, and the ball fell to the ground in foul territory, giving Machado another chance.
To add insult to injury, Machado pointed at Rizzo as he rounded the bases, making sure he didn’t forget his mistake.
San Diego ended up winning the game 9-4, moving them to 37-25 on the season. Chicago fell to 33-27, and back to second place in the NL Central.
