Anthony Hopkins scored his second Oscar for “The Father,” nearly 30 years since winning Best Actor for “The Silence of the Lambs.” The 83-year-old actor earned the the top honor over presumed frontrunner Chadwick Boseman, who tragically passed away from cancer at 43 in August.
He was not present at the ceremony to accept the win.
In addition to SAG and Golden Globe award best actor winner Boseman, Hopkins’ performance edged out Riz Ahmed (“Sound of Metal”), Gary Oldman (“Mank”) and Steven Yeun (“Minari”) for the top acting honor.
The veteran actor hasn’t taken home an award since his bone-chilling portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in the 1991 thriller. He was nominated five more times since, including last year for “The Two Popes.”
Hopkins also made history this year as the oldest Best Actor nominee in the history of the Academy Awards, People reported, for his role in “The Father.” The film also was nominated for Best Picture and his co-star, Olivia Colman, was nominated for Best Supporting Actress.
“The Father” tackles a difficult topic, dementia, as Hopkins plays a man trying to piece his life together. It’s written and directed by Florian Zeller and is based on his play called “Le Père.”
However, Twitter reactions were swift and harsh, decrying Hopkins’ win over Boseman, who scored multiple top honors throughout the season for his powerful, poignant portrayal of hot-headed musician Levee in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”
Hopkins scored nominations at the Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes, and SAG Awards, but was only victorious at the BAFTAs over Boseman.
Boseman’s wife, Taylor Simone Ledward, has been there to represent the talented actor during the awards season, accepting his trophies and delivering powerful speeches, beginning with the Actor Tribute prize at the Gotham Awards in January. She also delivered raw, emotional speeches at the Globes, NAACP Image Awards, the Critics Choice Awards and earlier this month at the SAG Awards.
“It is so hard to find a celebratory feeling in these moments as proud as we are of him,” Ledward said during the Critics Choice Awards in March. “Yes, for his work but even more just for who he is as a person. His work deserves this, his work in this film deserves this, he deserves this.”
