# Anime vs. Manga – what’s the difference?

Everyone seems to know, but what are the key differences between anime and manga? We reveal.

Some people often wonder what is the difference between manga and anime. This is like a puzzle for me and often confusing. While both are equally important to Japanese culture and entertainment, the two are not the same. Simply put, manga is the name for Japanese comics and graphic novels, while anime is the name for Japanese animation.

While both are viewed more as genres in the West, in reality they are a description of the way content is produced. They have much in common, and the creation of both is attributed to Osamu Tezuka, sometimes referred to as “the godfather of the manga” and the “Japanese Walt Disney”.

To decide what suits you better, you first need to really understand manga and anime.

WHAT IS MANGA?

Manga are more like comics than animation. Unlike anime, manga are often published in black and white. Why? Because they are usually published weekly and printing in color would take too much time and money.

Mangas tend to be quite cheap to publish and only require a small number of artists to produce them. In fact, there can only be one, the mangaka, who is usually both a writer and an illustrator and also takes on other roles in the publishing process.

WHAT IS ANIME?

In Japan the term Anime used for all cartoons, similar to the term cartoon in English. Only elsewhere is the term anime associated exclusively with cartoons from Japan.

There is a debate about whether the term anime can also be used to refer to animation that is not from Japan. While technically possible, anime, at least in the English language, has become synonymous with Japan.

Anime has visually distinct characteristics for characters and intentionally uses a limited style of representation of movement. In the West, most animation is cartoons used to tell stories for children, while anime often involves complex storylines and characters with adult themes.

MANGA CAN BE MORE ORIGINAL

Manga is considered by some to be more artistically original than anime, much like books about movies. This is because most mangaka only write original content, and many start out with self-publishing.

In fact, self-published works, or doujinshi, are incredibly popular. In contrast to manga, many anime are based on pre-existing stories. That’s because it’s cheaper to adapt an existing work than to develop a completely original storyline. Also, adaptations are believed to be a safer investment since the original work already has a following.

Manga is a much faster way to get a work out than anime. A single edition of a manga can be written, drawn and inked in a single week. An anime series, on the other hand, typically takes months of preparation and work to produce each episode.

WHAT’S BETTER: MANGA OR ANIME?

Impossible to say. It depends on the person and the story. The two can be very closely related as many mangas are made into anime, including Black Butler, Attack on Titan, and Dragon Ball, which spawned the Dragon Ball Z anime series.

Although neither is a genre, Japanese graphic novels and anime are particularly pronounced. Some fans will love manga, others will love anime. Many will love both. One thing is for sure, both manga and anime are incredibly popular with viewers in Japan and around the world.
