NASA has been forced to announce that it didn’t create a 13th zodiac sign, the sign has always existed.

The existence of Ophiuchus constellation — which dates back to the Babylonians more than 3,000 years ago — isn’t exactly new but reemerged in recent news reports.

That prompted NASA to resurface a 2016 post in response to accusations from stunned star-gazers that it’s rewritten the rules of the zodiac.

“Here at NASA, we study astronomy, not astrology,” the space agency said in a blog post. “We didn’t change any zodiac signs, we just did the math.”

The zodiac is an area in space that encompasses Earth and its rotation around the sun over the course of a year. It also contains the stars that make up the constellations of the zodiac.

NASA explained that the Babylonians split the zodiac into 12 equal parts, picking one constellation for each month of its 12-year calendar.

But there was one problem.

“Even according to the Babylonians’ own ancient stories, there were 13 constellations in the zodiac,” NASA explained. “So they picked one, Ophiuchus, to leave out. Even then, some of the chosen 12 didn’t fit neatly into their assigned slice of the pie and crossed over into the next one.”

NASA said the sun spends different lengths of time lined up with each constellation and to “make a tidy match with their 12-month calendar” the Babylonians nixed the Ophiuchus, the serpent-bearer.

“Then they assigned each of those 12 constellations equal amounts of time,” the agency said.

“So, we didn’t change any zodiac signs…we just did the math.”

The post slapped down a hoax that’s gained traction before, including in 2011, CNN noted.
