“Amy Schumer Reveals Alec Baldwin Joke She Wasn’t Allowed to Tell at Oscars”

While it was a comedian’s joke that led to the most infamous moment that happened at the Oscars, some of the material that could have been told that night may have been generated just as much controversy. That evening, Amy Schumer served as one of three hosts of the prestigious award ceremony alongside Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall. Those familiar with Schumer’s comedy will know that she’s always been one to push the envelope, though she kept her material pretty light on Oscar night.

There’s a reason for that, of course. Schumer was not given complete creative freedom with her material for the evening. In her first stand-up set since the Oscars, per Vanity Fair, Schumer addressed what happened that day, noting how Will Smith, aka “Ali” (referring to Smith’s Muhammad Ali biopic) attacked fellow comedian Chris Rock. She calls the entire ordeal a “bummer” and uses it to comment on the things she wasn’t permitted to say at the event as a way of brightening the mood in the aftermath of it all.

“I was kind of feeling myself…and then all of a sudden Ali was making his way up. It was just a f**king bummer. All I can say is that it was really sad, and I think it says so much about toxic masculinity. It was really upsetting, but I think the best way to comfort ourselves would be for me to say the Oscar jokes that I wasn’t allowed to say on TV.”

Schumer then revealed the Alec Baldwin joke she wasn’t allowed to tell at the ceremony, lamenting how telling that joke wouldn’t have been okay while an attendee slapping a presenter seemingly was. As Schumer says:

“I want to preface these Oscar jokes by saying that my lawyer said not to say these. Don’t tell anybody and don’t get mad at me… Don’t Look Up is the name of a movie? More like don’t look down the barrel of Alec Baldwin’s shotgun. I wasn’t allowed to say any of that, but you can just come up and [slap] someone.”

For the most part, Chris Rock has stayed silent on the Oscars situation. He did touch on the incident while opening a stand-up comedy show in Boston, explaining that he was still “processing” what happened and didn’t have too much else to say just yet. He did tease that when he does come out with more about the slap heard ’round the world, it will be done through his comedy.

“I don’t have a bunch of sh*t about what happened, so if you came to hear that, I have a whole show I wrote before this weekend,” Rock said. “I’m still kind of processing what happened. So, at some point I’ll talk about that sh*t. And it will be serious and funny.”

As for Will Smith, the King Richard star and Best Lead Actor winner has since resigned from the Academy.
