“Who Killed Sara?” returns for its second season Wednesday (May 19) after premiering in late March as the most popular foreign-language series in Netflix history — attracting an estimated 55 million worldwide subscribers.

The 10-episode (subtitled) Mexican drama, a labyrinthian whodunit, follows vengeful Alex Guzman (Manolo Cardona) who spent 18 years in prison wrongfully accused in the death of his younger (pregnant) sister, Sara. He’s now hellbent on destroying the powerful Lazcano family, who he believes responsible for Sara’s murder, and falls in love with Elisa (Carolina Miranda), the daughter of arrogant, amoral patriarch Cesar Lazcano (Gines Garcia Millan) — and, well, it’s complicated.

Season 2 picks up in the immediate aftermath of Season 1 — and Miranda says she’s surprised as anyone else regarding the series arc.

“The writers and producers give us one episode at a time and we’re always asking each other, ‘Did you kill Sara?’” Miranda told The Post. “We didn’t know how to react every week — we were surprised, and it was nice to work like that.”

The role of Elisa has elevated Miranda, 30, to international TV stardom in the span of two short months. While new to US audiences, she’s fashioned an impressive resume in her native Mexico, including award-winning turns in Telemundo’s “Senora Acero” (“Woman of Steel”) and TV Azteca’s “Las Bravo.” She co-starred (with Cardona) on “Claramente” and is currently shooting the period drama “Malverde” — with Alejandro Nones, who plays her older brother, Rodolfo Lazcano, on “Who Killed Sara?”

Miranda said she shares similar qualities with Elisa — who, as the series unfolds, allies with Alex to bring down her family and find justice for Sara (Ximena Lamadrid) who, it turns out, was hiding her battle with paranoid schizophrenia, adding some further wrinkles to the plot.

“It’s kind of weird. I’m a curious person, like Elisa, and I’m always asking about what’s happening around me,” she said. “But nobody is a good or bad person in this show. It’s not black and white. Everyone brings something different to their character. Elisa is a strong woman and a curious woman and causes many problems because of her curiosity. I think if my family killed someone I would stand by their side.”

Miranda said that, of all the “Who Killed Sara?” cast members, she’s especially close with Nones, particularly since they’re also playing siblings on “Malverde,” an upcoming (fall) Telemundo series based on the life of 19th century Mexican folklore hero Jesus Malverde dubbed “Angel of the Poor” for his “Robin Hood”-type exploits of robbing the rich and giving to the less fortunate in the Mexican state of Sinaloa.

“He’s my brother and my friend,” Miranda said of Nones. “We’re going to see the first episode [of ‘Malverde’] this week. And Manolo Cardona was my boss on another show called ‘Clarimente,’ so he’s my good friend, too.

And, she said, fans of “Who Killed Sara?” will see a lot more of Elisa — and of her relationship with the Lazcanos and with Alex — as Season 2 unwinds.

“She loves her family but she she also loves Alex,” Miranda said. “That makes things difficult.”
