“Additional Voice Cast & Visuals Released For Junji Ito’s Maniac Anime Anthology Series”

Netflix has revealed a new slate of voice cast members and visuals for the upcoming anthology anime series Junji Ito’s Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre. The announcement was made as part of the streaming platform’s Tudum Japan livestream on September 25, 2022. The series will premiere on Netflix sometime in 2023. 

The anime series will feature an ensemble voice cast for several different adapted Junji Ito stories. It will draw from some of his manga collections such as The Hanging Balloons, Lovesickness: Junji Ito Story Collection, and Deserter: Junji Ito Story Collection

The new cast members include Riho Sugiyama as Kazuko Morinaka, Daisuke Kishio as Shinya Shiraishi, and Iori Nomizu as Kagumi Fujino for “The Hanging Balloons.” For “Tomie: Photo,” the cast includes Rie Suegara as Tomie, Yumiri Hanamori as Tsukiko Izumisawa, Taku Yashiro as Yamazaki, Tomokazu Sugita as Tachi, and Hiroyuki Yoshino as Kimata. 

For “The Room With 4 Walls,” the voice cast consists of Yuuji Mitsuya as Souichi, Yoshimasa Hosoya as Kouichi, Yuka Saitou as Sayuri, and Yutaka Aoyama as Tagaisu. 

Additionally, Hiro Shimono will star as Oshikiri in “Intruder.” Other voice cast members for the anthology series include Youko Hikasa as Chiemi in “The Long Hair in the Attic,” Hisako Kanemoto as Sayoko in “Unendurable Labyrinth,” and Natsumi Takamori as Kuriko in “The Bully.”

In July 2022, Netflix also revealed the voice cast for the Hikizuri family in “The Strange Hikizuri Siblings: The Séance.” They include Takahiro Sakurai as Kazuya, Romi Park as Kinako, Hajime Iijima as Shigoro, Risa Shimizu as Narumi, Ayaka Asai as Hitoshi, and Tomoko Kaneda as Misako. 

Previous anime adaptations of Junji Ito’s work include Gyo: Tokyo Fish Attack, Junji Ito Collection, and the upcoming Uzumaki miniseries. His manga have also inspired live-action works such as the Tomie series, Long Dream, Kakashi, the 2000 Uzumaki film, and Love Ghost.
