#Adam Gase holds light walk-through as Jets’ injuries mount

August 18, 2020 | 7:30pm

The Jets have so many injuries already that coach Adam Gase decided to give the team a rest Tuesday.

Instead of a full-blown practice, the Jets just had a light walk-through. The Jets are down to seven healthy wide receivers and three tight ends. With rosters at 80 players instead of 90, the Jets are struggling to have enough players to practice correctly.

“The good thing is I do think we’ve got guys returning here hopefully in the next few days, especially next week,” Gase said. “Hopefully we get a bunch of guys back, which really that’s going to be the key because after today we’ll have two days of padded practices and then we’ll have a day off. So, these next few days, hopefully we get a couple guys back and then get more after that little day off.”

At wide receiver, the Jets are without rookie Denzel Mims (hamstring) and Vyncint Smith (core muscle surgery Tuesday). Braxton Berrios missed Tuesday’s practice for a personal reason. The team reached a deal with veteran Chris Hogan on Sunday, but he has not cleared COVID-19 protocols yet. Gase said Hogan was getting his physical on Tuesday, so he could be on the field soon.

Gase had no timeline for Mims, who has been out since last week.

“It’s one of those injuries, it’s hard to rush when it’s a guy that his whole job is to run,” Gase said.

Defensive line coach Andre Carter has liked what he has seen from second-year defensive lineman Quinnen Williams so far.

“From Day 1 since I saw him, just a better mentality, a better body,” Carter said. “I think just more confident. Obviously, when you’re a rookie and especially when you’re a high draft pick, there’s a level of high expectations but also from a mental standpoint but also when you look at last year to this year just overthinking, overanalyzing, not playing fast. He realized, ‘Coach Carter this is what I have to do — just line up and go.’ ”

The Jets took Williams No. 3 overall in the 2019 draft. He had a disappointing rookie season with very little impact. Carter said he believes Williams is ready to start playing and stop overthinking things.

“He’s in a great frame of mind right now,” Carter said.

Rookie CB Bryce Hall remains on the reserve/COVID-19 list but has been on the sideline the last few days, a sign he may be close to coming off that list. Still, Gase made it sound like Hall will not practice immediately because he is still recovering from a serious ankle injury he suffered last season at Virginia.
