#Adam Gase calls out Jets for penalties: ‘It was ridiculous’

The 1991 football comedy “Necessary Roughness” wasn’t as laughable as all of the costly roughing penalties called against the Jets on Thursday night against the Denver Broncos.

The Jets committed four of their six personal fouls through the first two quarters and were whistled for 11 penalties for 118 yards altogether in a 37-28 loss to fall to 0-4 for the season.

Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams’ unit already has six roughing-the-passer flags this season, including two Thursday night on first-time starting quarterback Brett Rypien.

“We had multiple chances to get off the field, but we hurt ourselves. The penalties were just, they were brutal,” coach Adam Gase said. “We made them punt one time. … When we did hit them, we him ’em too late. We were getting personal fouls. It was ridiculous.”

According to ESPN Stats & Info, only two other NFL teams have been whistled multiple times for roughing the passer — Chicago (three) and Atlanta (two).

The Jets’ first 15-yard personal foul — a roughing call on linebacker Tarrell Basham on Rypien at the Broncos’ 42-yard line midway through the first quarter — led to a Brandon McManus field goal to cut the Jets’ lead to 7-3.

Defensive lineman Quinnen Williams also was called for roughing the passer early in the second quarter. The Broncos scored on the next play, a 48-yard hookup between Rypien and rookie wideout Jerry Jeudy, who ripped the ball away from Jets cornerback Pierre Desir.

Linebacker Alec Ogletree also was called for unnecessary roughness for a late hit on running back Melvin Gordon III with 11:34 in the second quarter. And safety Bradley McDougald also lost his composure with a late hit with backup quarterback Jeff Driskel sliding with 2:20 left in the second quarter, leading to a 1-yard touchdown run by Gordon.

The most costly penalty, however, was the Jets’ first of the second half. Williams grabbed Rypien’s face mask on what would have been a third-down sack with five minutes left in the fourth quarter on the series after Sam Ficken’s fifth field goal had put the Jets ahead 28-27.

Seven plays later, McManus drilled a 53-yard field goal to nudge the Broncos back into the lead, 30-28, with 3:08 remaining. Steve McLendon later got called for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Rypien in the closing seconds.
