#A healthy C.J. Mosley could be a game-changer for the Jets

As the Jets get close to training camp, I am examining the roster and giving you my top 25 players. Each weekday, we will reveal another person on the list, leading right into camp. I am not including rookies on this list because I do not feel it is possible to fully evaluate them before they play a game.

No. 2: C.J. Mosley

Last year’s ranking: 3

Position: ILB

Age on Opening Day: 28

How acquired: Signed a five-year, $85 million contract as an unrestricted free agent on March 15, 2019

Years left on contract: 4

2020 Salary Cap figure: $17.5 million

Looking back at 2019

Mosley was the biggest splurge in the Jets’ big-money spending spree in 2019. The Jets outbid the Ravens to land the linebacker, clearly overspending to ensure he would leave Baltimore.

For three quarters of the first game, it was clear why. Mosley was all over the field against the Bills. He had an interception returned for a touchdown, broke up two passes, recovered a fumble and seemed to make every tackle from sideline to sideline. Then, his groin popped while defending a deep pass down the field. Mosley left the game and the Jets defense fell apart, blowing a 16-point lead in a 17-16 loss.

Mosley’s value was apparent when he was not out there. The Jets took some time to regain their footing without Mosley, who is basically the quarterback of the defense. The groin injury took longer than anyone anticipated to heal. Mosley finally returned in October against the Patriots but was not himself. He looked like he was playing on one leg. Mosley was again shut down and he underwent core muscle surgery in December.

Mosley’s first year with the Jets ended up being just two games and 114 snaps.

Outlook for 2020

The Jets are counting on a healthy Mosley to show why they made a major investment in him last season.

Mosley has said he feels 100 percent and will be ready to go when training camp begins. The coaches and trainers may hold him back in camp in order for him to ease his way back in.

There is no doubt about what kind of player Mosley is. He also has shown in his time with the Jets how much of a leader he can be.

The coaches were wowed by his commitment to the team last year even when he was injured. Sometimes, guys who are not playing just spend their time in the training room and become detached from the team. Mosley was in every meeting and tried to help out his replacements.

Mosley could be a key locker room figure for Adam Gase this year. The team is going to have to figure out what they are going to do when it comes to any social justice protests like kneeling for the national anthem. Mosley will be a key voice in those discussions.

Beyond his leadership, the Jets just need Mosley to be himself again on the field. The Jets defense will have a different feel with Mosley in the middle. He is a smart, athletic player who offenses have to account for. That is something Gregg Williams will welcome back this year.
