#Netflix ends free 30-day trial offer in the US

It’s the end of an era for Netflix freeloaders.

The streaming giant ended free trials to new customers in the US, after years of giving away the first month of its service free. Netflix’s US sign-up page now says trials are no longer available, with the company instead touting that it allows you to cancel anytime at no additional cost.

A rep for Netflix confirmed that the streamer discontinued the free trial, adding: “We’re looking at different marketing promotions in the U.S. to attract new members and give them a great Netflix experience.”

Netflix, the world’s biggest subscription video service with more than 192 million paying subscribers, was an outlier among its competitors offering month-long free trials. A host of new services had been offering week-long free trials, such as HBO Max, CBS All Access, Disney+ and Peacock Premium, NBCUniversal’s ad-free streaming service. But as Disney gained more subscribers, it stopped offering free trials altogether in June.

Prior to winding down free trials in the US, Netflix had begun phasing out free trials elsewhere in the world, starting in Mexico two years ago. Netflix free trials are still available in some select markets.
