#7-year-old Miami girl left brain dead after drive-by shooting

A 7-year-old Miami girl was left brain dead in a drive-by shooting that also wounded a toddler and two adults, according to a report.

The girl was shot late Saturday in the Brownsville section of northwest Miami-Dade County when a gunman squeezed off more than 12 shots as people were getting out of a car in front of a house, the Miami Herald reported.

Police identified the girl early Monday as Alana Washington. She remained in critical condition at a hospital, police said.

One man inside the home returned fire, although it’s unclear who was the intended target of the shooting, according to the report.

Two adults and a 16-month-old boy were also shot, police told the newspaper. The boy, who was hit in the thigh, was listed in stable condition at a hospital.

The adult victims, a 23-year-old old woman and a 19-year-old man, were also listed in stable condition with injuries to the torso, shoulder and neck, the Herald reported.

Homicide detectives are now handling the case due to the girl’s grave condition, the Herald reported. Witnesses told WPLG that she appeared to have been shot in the back of the head.

One witness said she heard “about 15” shots fired before helping her four wounded neighbors until paramedics arrived.

“I just seen the victim on the ground and I just ran to help,” she told the station. “I just tried to stop the blood.”

A Miami-Dade police spokesman told The Post he had no information to immediately provide early Monday regarding the shooting.

Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said prosecutors from her office responded to the scene along with police investigators to gather “clues & information” to help identify and arrest those involved.

“The million eyes of our community’s residents may have seen something that could provide an essential identifying clue,” she tweeted. “Please come forward and say something. You may become an important lifesaver with just a few words.”

A combined reward of $10,000 was being offered by Miami-Dade police and county officials early Monday for information leading to an arrest in the shooting.

“This type of indiscriminate violence is unconscionable & we as a community cannot become callous to it,” Miami-Dade Police Department Director Alfredo Ramirez tweeted Saturday.
