7 Songs for ‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’ Relationships Going Into Season 2

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Songs Music Performance

Sergei Bachlakov/NBC

From the beginning, the music drew us in and has played an important part in Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, and it was partly why we couldn’t stop watching every week.

While we wait for hopefully good news about the future of the series — it’s one of several on NBC that has yet to be renewed or canceled for the 2020-21 season — we’re taking a look at where the relationships left off the best way we know: through music. After all, “heart songs” are how Zoey (Jane Levy) hears people’s inner thoughts.

We have the love triangle, the family figuring out life without Mitch (Peter Gallagher) after he died in the finale, and so much more. Scroll down to see which songs perfectly describe where the characters and key relationships are heading into a potential second season.

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Max Zoey Relationship

“You Belong With Me” by Taylor Swift

Max to Zoey

For much of the first season, fans were left wondering if Zoey would choose best friend Max (Skyler Astin) or office crush Simon (John Clarence Stewart), but in the finale, she seemed to finally see the former in the way he’d wanted. Sadly, immediately after, she found out it was time to say goodbye to her father, and while her love life is of course on the back burner while she grieves, that doesn’t mean she won’t still be hearing the “heart songs” of those around her, and it’s easy to imagine Max singing “Dreaming about the day when you wake up/and find that what you’re looking for has been here the whole time” even after their finale kiss.

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Zoey Simon Jealousy

“Are You Gonna Be My Girl?” by Jet

Simon to Zoey

Now this his engagement is over, Simon has admitted that he’s jealous of Zoey and Max — and we know that he’s still going to be very much in her life. Depending on what happens next in the love triangle, if it even plays much of a factor in a second season, Simon singing, “Well I could see/you home with me/but you were with another man” could very well fit after recent developments between Max and Zoey.

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Simon Zoey Max Love Triangle

NBC

“Thinking of You” by Katy Perry

Zoey on Max and Simon

Zoey is clearly torn between the two men in her life; she admits as much to her father in their farewell. “Cause when I’m with him/I am thinking of you” would certainly fit the bill, at least when it comes to where they stood at the end of the season.

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Maggie Without Mitch

James Dittiger/NBC

“Now You Belong to Heaven” by Mari Olsen

Maggie without Mitch

Maggie (Mary Steenburgen) had the heartbreaking “Dream a Little Dream of Me” farewell to her husband in his last moments, but if there’s a second season, the series would have to explore what comes next for her. While she may have been prepared to lose her husband, that won’t make it any easier. “Miss your voice, miss your smile/everything about you, worth a while/always wondering where you are” could very well describe Maggie moving forward.

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Clarkes Grieve Mitch

NBC

“Let It Be” by The Beatles

The Clarkes without Mitch

It may be hard to come up with something that has as much emotion to it as “American Pie” in the finale, but as the Clarkes move forward and figure out what’s next after losing Mitch, “Let It Be” may be exactly what they need to do.

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Mo Eddie Relationship

Sergei Bachlakov/NBC

“Never Gonna Let You Go” by Sergio Mendes

Mo to Eddie

The couple’s relationship did hit a bump in the road in the first season, but they were very much back on track in the finale. And we just hope that continues to remain true and that the lyrics “You and me/we’re gonna be/better than we were before” fits their relationship going forward.

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Emily David Baby

Sergei Bachlakov/NBC

“Child of Mine” by Bill Staines

David and Emily as new parents

As the season ended, we were still waiting to meet David (Andrew Leeds) and Emily’s (Alice Lee) child, but chances are if there’s a second season, she’ll have already given birth off-screen, depending on when it picks up. Either way, this song, with the lyrics, “There is a road and that road is all your own/but we are here, you need not walk alone,” could certainly be something either or both sing to the newest addition to their family.
