“#7 Questions About Dr. Reynolds’ Future for ‘New Amsterdam’ Season 3”

We would have gotten that answer if production hadn’t shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic. Because the season ended early, we didn’t get the answers to all the questions left hanging regarding his character, the actor revealed during the drama’s “ATX TV…from the Couch” panel.
Fortunately, we know we’ll get those answers because NBC renewed New Amsterdam for three more seasons in January. Scroll down to see what needs to be addressed about Reynolds’ future.

Will he return permanently?
Chances are that we’ll see Sims again in some capacity, given that his character wasn’t killed off. But he could always return simply to help out his former coworkers — depending on how the pandemic is written into the show — or visit family and stop by the hospital. What needs to be addressed as soon as possible is whether or not he’ll be returning in the same capacity.

Will the pandemic and how it’s incorporated affect his arc?
Just because there were certain plans in place for his character if Season 2 had ended as it was originally going to doesn’t mean that those will stick. As executive producer David Schulner said, “All our plans are out the window, and like everyone else in the world, we’re going to have to rethink everything we do.” Maybe Reynolds’ return will be part of how the show handles the aftermath of the pandemic and then he decides to stay (or not to stay).

Will Evie return with Reynolds?
When faced with a job offer taking Evie to San Francisco or her turning it down, Reynolds surprised her by deciding to move with her. If he does return in any way, will she be with him? Will they have gotten married yet?

If he returns without Evie, is their relationship over?
They tried to make a long-distance relationship work while they were planning their wedding, but that’s not easy to do. If Reynolds decides that New York (and New Amsterdam) is where he belongs, will she join him? Will she stay in San Francisco? Will they try to make it work?

How will Drs. Reynolds and Shin clash?
Because of the way the season ended, fans only really got to see Daniel Dae Kim’s Dr. Cassian Shin working with Dr. Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) in the clips from the unaired flu pandemic episode and Dr. Lauren Bloom (Janet Montgomery). According to Schulner, we’ll continue to see that same approach — resting so he’s available for trauma patients — from Shin. How will Reynolds react to that?

What’s next for Drs. Reynolds and Bloom?
There’s always the possibility that the two have a future together if things don’t work out between him and Evie and only he returns to New York. But even without romance, the two mean a great deal to one another, and they shared a significant moment in his farewell.

Is a spinoff a possibility?
NBC clearly sees something in the series with its multi-season renewal, and spinoffs are all the rage right now. Maybe Reynolds won’t return to New York but instead, viewers will be able to follow him to San Francisco and a Season 3 episode could serve as a backdoor pilot. (We have already seen him working in another hospital in Mexico.)
