“#Tesla driver arrested for backseat driverless ride does it again”
The Tesla driver who was jailed on Monday for riding in the backseat of his driverless car is reportedly back to his old tricks.
Param Sharma pulled up to an interview with KTVU in San Francisco Wednesday in the back of a brand new Tesla — that he bought upon his release from Santa Rita Jail to replace his impounded vehicle, the outlet said.
“Yeah, I’m rich as (expletive). I’m very rich,” the 25-year-old told the station in regards to his $39,490 impulse buy.
He demonstrated to KTVU how quickly he could move from the right passenger seat to the driver’s seat.
“I feel safer back here than I do up there,” Sharma said.
Under California law, a driver must still be sitting behind the wheel in a car with autopilot features.
Just days before his interview, Sharma was busted cruising over the 50 mph San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge while lounging in the back seat.
He was charged with two counts of reckless driving and disobeying a peace officer. It was the second time he was arrested for the infraction in as many months.
“Prior to this arrest, members of the public had captured video of someone resembling Sharma operating his vehicle in the same reckless manner, and the CHP’s Oakland Area had cited Sharma on April 27 for similar behavior,” the agency said in a statement.
A legal analyst told the local station that the judge at Sharma’s July 6 court date is expected to give the suspect a stern warning, and threaten the repeat offender with escalating penalties.
The back seat driver said he is undeterred, and will continue to use his money to flout the law.
“I’ll just get a new Tesla every time. I have unlimited money to blow on Teslas. If you take my Tesla away, I will get another Tesla,” Sharma said.
Use of the autopilot mode has been linked to at least three deaths across the country since 2016.
