Ariana Grande: Positions [Republic]

Ariana Grande’s new album Positions arrived with little buildup, getting announced in an October 14 tweet from Grande that read simply, “i can’t wait to give u my album this month.” The follow-up to last year’s thank u, next was led by the title track, which got a presidential music video. Positions includes appearances from the Weeknd (“off the table”), Doja Cat (“motive”), and Ty Dolla $ign (“safety net”).

Oneohtrix Point Never: Magic Oneohtrix Point Never [Warp]

Magic Oneohtrix Point Never takes its title from Boston’s Magic 106.7 radio station. The album serves as a retrospective of sorts for Daniel Lopatin’s lengthy and varied career; the music videos, for instance, have harkened back to cover artworks from his discography. Prominent collaborators on the album includeCaroline Polachek, Arca, and the Weeknd.

Elvis Costello: Hey Clockface [Concord]

Hey Clockface, Elvis Costello’s 31st studio album, was recorded in two parts, in two different cities. The first phase saw him decamp to Helsinki to record three songs on his own, playing all of the instruments himself. The second phase took place in Paris, where he recorded with other musicians. Costello didn’t do much arranging in advance: As he recently told Robert Levine for Billboard, the other musicians “played what they felt was right.”
