5 Mind Blowing Facts about Casinos

Usually, we perceive casinos as glamorous, exciting and thrilling, as they have a mysterious vibe to it. If we look at how Hollywood represents the wide world of gambling in one of the most famous casino movies, from James Bond to Ocean’s 11, it’s no wonder many eagerly want to test their luck in Las Vegas or Monte Carlo. We tried to demystify the wide world of gambling, bringing the five mind blowing facts about casinos you haven’t heard about.

Casinos have an Italian origin

When we think about casinos, the first thing that pops into our mind is either Las Vegas or Monte Carlo, but only a few know that casinos originated in Italy. The name “casino” originates from the Italian word “casa” which stands for the house, made to be as a cover for summerhouses and social clubs. What’s more, organised gambling dates back to 15th century Venice. Seems like we have more things to thank Italians for?

One man sold everything he has and bet it on a single roulette spin

Over a decade ago, on TV screens in the UK was premiered a show called “Double or nothing”. The concept was clear: an English professional gambler Ashley Revel wanted to sell all of his possessions so he could stake it on the turn of a roulette wheel. After he sold everything and was left only with clothes on his back, Revel staked more than £130 000 on a wheel in a casino in Las Vegas. Luckily, he managed to win the bet and went out of the casino with a whooping £270,600.

Playing the Devil’s game

Did you know that roulette was nicknamed the Devil’s game? The reason that earned this game the nickname is even more intriguing. Someone was (obviously) bored enough to add up all the numbers shown on the wheel, with a total of 666 which is the Devil’s number. If you’re prejudiced, this might look like a warning sign, but in truth, the game is not for the faint-hearted! And even though it’s true that this game gives a fair amount of adrenaline, it’s the game where players actually have the biggest chance of winning. For instance, in case you bet on black, you have a 50/50 chance of winning.

Casinos are heavily prohibited

We know that some countries ban any type of gambling like Iran, UAE, or Cambodia, but some states in the USA prohibit gambling too. This is the case with New Jersey which had a ban on gambling until recently. Even now, when the ban is lifted, it’s heavily restricted on which games can and cannot be played online and brick and mortar casinos are included.

Slot machines have to pay at least 70%

If you play online slot machines, then you must have noticed the “RTP” inscription on the screen. This actually stands for “return to player” and explains which amount is expected to be paid in relation to player stakes. That’s the minimum that can be expected, however, some online casinos do pay more.
