#1-year-old boy killed, parents badly burned while fleeing Washington wildfire

A 1-year-old boy was killed and his parents were badly burned as the family tried to flee a raging wildfire in Washington, authorities said.

The Hyland family’s burnt and abandoned truck was found Tuesday afternoon, with search-and-rescue teams locating dad Jake and mom Jamie, who is pregnant, the next morning along the banks of the Columbia River, the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office said, according to the Seattle Times.

Their toddler, Uriel, was dead.

The family, who are from the Seattle suburb of Renton, were at their property in rural Okanogan over the weekend when they got caught in the Cold Springs Fire around midnight Sunday, according to a GoFundMe page set up by extended family.

The post said Wednesday that Jamie, 26, suffered burns on 40 to 50 percent of her body and had undergone surgery to her arms. Jake, 31, had burns on 25 percent of his body and will also need surgery on his arms.

“They are both still critical at this point, but Jamie is more so than Jake,” the post said.

The pair were first taken to Three Rivers Hospital in Brewster, then flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The sheriff’s office did not say how the boy died.

The Cold Springs Fire, located just south of Omak in the northern part of the state, has scorched more than 163,000 acres. The blaze was 10 percent contained as of Wednesday night, according to Fox 28 Spokane.

Wildfires have broken out across the West Coast, including in California and Oregon, leveling entire communities and forcing the evacuations of hundreds of thousands of residents.

At least six people were confirmed dead by late Wednesday — with officials warning that the death toll would likely increase in the coming days.
